March 2013 Uwharrie Work Weekend

Thank you to everyone in ONSC who came out to help with the work day at Uwharrie!  With the sponsorship of a number of regional clubs and John Deere, we got a ton of work done today at three different sites in Uwharrie National Forest.

The ONSC crew, among many volunteers, worked on the Wolf’s Den Trailhead, which is our club sponsored trail in Uwharrie.  We did a number of things:

  • Removed an old rotten tree
  • Removed all the old split-rail fencing, which has proven to be ineffective at keeping out vehicles
  • Cleaned up a bunch of brush
  • Dug out the tail ditches
  • Packed the tail ditches with hay bails
  • Installed a brand new information kiosk
  • Started the installation of all new wooden guardrail fencing

One bit of bad news is that Terry ( USFS ) told us that Rocky Mountain Loop will be temporarily closed between Sawmill and Slab Pile ( Kodak Rock section ) due to the archaeological sites located around Kodak.  We were told that the trails would be opened as soon as the new guardrail is finished around that area.  THIS IS THE REASON why it is IMPORTANT that we continue volunteering at Uwharrie.  Our volunteering efforts help KEEP UWHARRIE OPEN for many years to come.

Overall we had a great time!  Thanks again to everyone who came out and enjoy the pictures!

ONSC Holiday Party – December 11, 2010

Save the date: December 11, 2010, hosted by Jerry and Regina Davis in Cary, NC!

The ONSC annual holiday party, telling of tales from 2010 events, and planning for 2011 will be December 11 at Jerry and Regina’s house in Cary (see the ‘Mud Forum for details). Clint and Stacy Strong have set  an amazingly high standard for our annual holiday party, so expect a fabulous event hosted by Jerry and Regina!

We’ll recap 2010, start the 2011 event planning, and discuss any Club ideas, business, or issues our Members wish to discuss. We may even have a Board Election!

Regardless, be sure to save the date and make this event. We’ll raise a toast (or 5) to the Club, our Members, and our Cruisers and Toyotas!

Maple Court Veterans Housing Community Garden

We now have images from ONSC’s August 2010 volunteer event at Maple Court Veteran’s Housing facility in Durham, where Club Members came together to build one new community garden, and refurbish another.

Through the generosity and effort of participating members, we were able to build an attractive raised vegetable garden for the Veterans. A wide variety of vegetables were planted, including a large number of greens.

Our Veterans deserve all we can provide, and Maple Court is a wonderful facility located near the Durham VA Hospital that assists our Veterans with their transition back to civilian life. The garden is but one method of providing assistance. Thanks again to all who assisted!
